Bio
Established in 1986, the Wanza Botanical Garden has a rich history of conserving Ethiopia's indigenous plants and trees in the heart of Addis Ababa. Over the past two decades, the garden has completed 70% of its landscape, becoming a vital green space and forestry refuge within the bustling capital city.
As sustainability and climate change have risen to the forefront of global priorities, the Wanza Botanical Garden has embarked on an ambitious transformation, transitioning from a linear to a circular economy model. Leveraging our expertise in greenhouse nurseries, urban beekeeping, and sustainable practices, we are redefining the role of botanical gardens in the 21st century.
Towards a Sustainable, Circular Future
The Wanza Botanical Garden project now aims to become the first urban, sustainable botanical garden in the East African region. By embracing the principles of the circular economy, we are developing innovative solutions that minimize waste, maximize resource efficiency, and inspire a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
Our efforts span a wide range of initiatives, from renewable energy systems and nature-based water management to zero-waste waste treatment and upcycled construction materials. At the heart of it all is a deep reverence for Ethiopia's unique flora and a commitment to using this botanical wonderland as a catalyst for sustainable development.
Inspiring Sustainable Change
The Wanza Botanical Garden is not just a place of natural beauty; it is a living, breathing model of what is possible when sustainability is placed at the center of urban planning and community engagement. By showcasing the power of circular economy approaches, we hope to inspire other developing countries in the region to aspire to and achieve their sustainability goals.
Join us on this transformative journey as we cultivate a greener, more resilient, and more equitable future for Addis Ababa and beyond. Together, let's prove that sustainability can truly bloom in the heart of the city.
